I have decided to run for Allegany County Commissioner because I feel I can help address the problems that are hurting our community. I have the experience to work with others to get things done and will bring a fresh perspective to the problems we face and will face in the coming years.
We have many challenges here in Allegany County. The two most important are the county's fiscal outlook and economic development.
While progress has been made on our budget in recent years, we need to take immediate steps to ensure that we are on firm financial ground.
We rely too much on state and federal aid to balance our budget.
We receive nearly 1/8 of our county’s budget from the state.
As the federal government cuts spending so does the state. This means Allegany County will see a reduction of the money we receive. Moving forward we need to create a budget that is less reliant on state and federal aid so that when more cuts inevitably come we will be prepared.
On economic development we need to do a better job of highlighting what Allegany County can offer. Things like: affordable housing and low living costs, low crime rates, little traffic, short commutes, our natural beauty, the friendliness of our community, and our proximity to major cities.
Our Economic Development team needs to be more aggressive in promoting ourselves to companies focusing on biotech, cyber-security, and heavy manufacturing companies. (Please click the "On The Issues" Tab for specific details)
Please check out the 14 for 2014 tab, which has real ideas for real results in economic development.
